System Profile

In December 2009, NRG Energy, Inc., through its subsidiary NRG Thermal, signed a long-term contract to provide comprehensive, high-efficiency energy services to the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP).

The CHP+NRG® system that will serve UMCPP includes

  • three 24,000-lb/hr boilers,
  • three 1,000-ton electric chillers,
  • 700-ton steam absorption chiller,
  • a 4.6 MW gas turbine,
  • a 34,300 lb/hr heat recovery steam generator,
  • 6 MW emergency diesel generators, and
  • a 1.2 million-gallon thermal energy storage system for off-peak chilled water production.

The system's total steam production capacity is 106,300 lb/hr.

NRG Energy Center Princeton’s operating engineers will monitor and control system components through an advanced software system that will optimize operations for energy use and cost efficiency, minimizing the Medical Center’s utility cost and reducing its environmental footprint. The system also will participate in the Emergency Load Response Program for PJM, operator of the regional electric grid.
